Loudness
the intensity of color, contrast, or scale
— how strongly an element calls for attention
Loudness is the volume of the interface.
It is not noise; it is intensity
— the degree to which an element pushes forward.
Loud elements feel:
- urgent — high contrast, bright color
- dominant — large scale, strong weight
- immediate — they speak first
Quiet elements feel:
- gentle — low contrast, soft color
- supportive — they stay in the background
- calm — they let the structure breathe
Loudness is a tool of emphasis, not a style.
How loudness is created
- Contrast — higher contrast = louder
- Color saturation — brighter = louder
- Scale — larger = louder
- Weight — bolder = louder
Why loudness matters
Loudness shapes hierarchy.
Use it sparingly — loudness without purpose becomes noise.
